5 Local Businesses You Have to See

5 Local Businesses You Have to See

One thing that’s amazing about Phoenix are the number of local businesses that have decided to call the Valley home. And even though there are also a number of chains and multi-state establishments that also choose Phoenix as a home to one of their locations, it’s the local businesses that have truly become the heart and soul of the city.

Especially in tougher times (like the recent Covid pandemic, for example), it can be difficult for small businesses to thrive and grow. With limited resources and ever-increasing costs, it’s imperative that small businesses not only retain their existing clientele, but get in front of new potential customers to fall in love with their products, brand, and often, beautifully curated stores.

Take a look at 5 of Phoenix’s local gems that you’ve just got to see:

  1. UrbAna
Talk about cute! UrbAna has two locations, one in Scottsdale Quarter and its flagship store, located in Arcadia. Walk into either one of their stores and you’ll be blown away with the amazing collection of gifts, home goods, and must-haves when it comes to entertaining. What’s more, the store stocks its shelves with many items that were created by local artists and designers, making it a wonderful supporter of the community itself. Plus, with an amazing array of coffee table books, glassware, living room decor, and yes, even kids gifts, UrbAna is the perfect place to visit for birthday, hostess, holiday, or “just because” gift giving.

  2. Zak’s Chocolate
Looking for some delectable chocolate creations by some amazing culinary artists? Then look no further than Zak’s Chocolate. Honored in Food & Wine Magazine as a producer of some of America’s best chocolate, we’re lucky enough to call the craft chocolate makers a local gem. Zak’s Chocolate is one of the few chocolate shops that literally makes their own chocolate 100% from scratch— literally from bean to bar. And with an array of goodies like truffles, brownies, bonbons, and other delicious confections, there’s sure to be an option for everyone.

  3. MacAlpine’s Diner & Soda Fountain
If you’re looking to be transported back to the 1950s, MacAlpine’s is the place to go. The diner and soda fountain was purchased by Fred MacAlpine in 1938, and has stood the test of time ever since. With famous customers that include the likes of Barry Goldwater, Frank Lloyd Wright, and even Wayne Newton. Along with an array of delicious, classic diner options (like burgers, fries, BLTs, and pie), the restaurant also has over 99 syrup flavors to create any soda combo your heart desires (or your brain can think up).

  4. Changing Hands
If you love a good book shop, you’ll absolutely fall in love with Changing Hands. With 2 locations in Phoenix and Tempe, Changing Hands is Phoenix’s oldest and largest independent bookstore. The first store opened in 1974, and now includes the 2 shops, an event space, a bar that offers coffee, wine, and beer and snacks. The owners also have a vision of continually helping to build the community in a responsible manner, by turning a modest profit while respectfully employing workers and doing business with authors and vendors.

  5. Main Street Harvest
Main Street Harvest calls downtown Mesa home, and is a grocer composed of all local food producers. The concept promotes a number of amazing local companies, including Proof Bread, Cartel Coffee Lab, Danzeisen Dairy, Steadfast Farm, and dozens of other local favorites. The store aims to support the local trades of those involved in food production, as well as to help residents eat better with high quality options.

While chain stores will always be an option, there’s just something that hits differently when shopping local. By spending your money with stores that were forged within your own community, you know that you’re not only helping to make someone’s dream come true, you’re helping to put dollars back into the city that you love. And more, helping to create a safe space for other potential founders to try their hand at an amazing local business.
