8 Things You Don't Want to Forget When Building a House

Building a house can be incredibly exciting. For many, this can be a feat that took years to accomplish and often, can be summed up as the “building of a dream home.” While creating one’s home from a vision can be an incredibly fulfilling process, it can also be somewhat daunting. There are so many things to remember when building a house and, when so many moving parts, it can be very easy to forget some of the small details that make building your own home so worthwhile.

Whether it’s an extremely simple build, or something that will require an entire wall to be planned, it’s important to keep the details you’d like to see in mind— both so that you can communicate them, and so that you can ensure you see them built into your final product.

With that in mind, what things do you need to remember when building a house?

  1. Lights, Switches and Outlets
Although these may seem like fairly straightforward necessities to have built into your house, you’ll want to make sure you’re considering your convenience, how you live, and how you get through your routine. For example, do you need to have an outlet in a specific area of your kitchen to ensure you can use large appliances? Should those outlets be under your cabinets or somewhere hidden for aesthetics? Would you prefer lights under your cabinets or light switches that can control the same lights from different parts of the room? These are all things to consider.

  2. Bedroom TV Placement

As you’re designing your bedroom, keep in mind that, more than likely, you’re going to want to have a TV in there. You’ll want to make sure that its placement is in a convenient location, as well as something you can view from your bed and/or other parts of the room. Do you want a little “nook” built into the wall for your TV specifically? Is your bedroom TV extra large? Take into account exactly the size, shape and location you’d like your TV to be placed at, and create a room that takes those desires into account.

  3. Closet Storage

Can you ever have too much closet storage? Building a home is your chance to really customize certain aspects of your future living spaces. Your closet should be one of those spaces that you take the time to construct especially for you. Make sure that you have the storage for accessories, a spot for shoes, handbags, drawers to house dresser items, and a design that will neatly hold both long and short clothes.

  4. Shower Head Height

If you’re particularly tall (probably around 6 ft and taller), you’ll want to consider the height of your shower heads. While most houses have a standard distance from the shower head to the faucet handle, or from the shower head to the ceiling, you’ll want to make sure that your personal bathroom takes your height into account.

  5. Outdoor TV placement

Although you may want to put final touches on things like your backyard later, it’s always a good idea to think about them while building your house. This can be for a number of reasons, but when it comes to your back patio, the biggest one is placement of items like your furniture and outdoor television. This can get forgotten in a sea of other to-dos, but it’s definitely worth considering to optimize your indoor/outdoor living.

  6. Dimmers

While lights and light switches may be a given when it comes to building your house, dimmers often fall by the wayside. However, dimmers can be a great way to save energy, increase the life of your light bulbs, and can help add another level of control when it comes to setting your room’s mood. By considering installing them early, you’ll be able to utilize their benefits right from the start, as well as avoid any messes installation may cause later on down the line.

  7. Power Point for Christmas Lights

One of the most convenient features of any house is having an outlet near your roof, specifically so that you’ll have a power source for Christmas lights, party lights, and anything in between. Not only can it make hanging lights much easier, it will keep your house from looking messy from hanging wires.

  8. Toilet Paper Holder Placement

Everyone knows that you need to have a toilet paper holder in every bathroom. What people don’t always consider, however, is where and how those toilet paper holders are placed. Often, these bathroom additions can be placed too far from the toilet, in an odd position, or at a strange height. Take the time to ensure your toilet paper holders are in a place where they’re both easily accessible, and comfortably placed from the start.

Although building a house can get really hectic really fast, there are a number of items that are worth keeping in mind from the beginning and discussing with your contractor straightaway. Not only will these help to make your house more comfortable, they’ll be small conveniences that can add to the overall happiness you feel when you’re finally calling your new build your own.
